Murder in the Adirondacks : "An American tragedy" revisited
Published in Unknown Binding by North Country Books ()
Author: Craig Brandon
Average review score:

A must read
Murder in the Adirondacks:An American Tragedy Revisited is a must read. It captures and holds a readers attention while teaching them alittle bit about Central New York History. Through the book, a reader begins to "meet" the parties who were involved in this historic case, which was played out so many years ago. And then after getting to know the people, the reader is captivated by the trial and the events which surrounded Mr. Gillette's life immideatly after the verdict. All in all, a great read. I escpecially loved it as a Cortland County resident.

Great for any Upstate New Yorkers
This is a great book about the Chester Gillette murder case of 1906. Gillette took his girlfriend up to Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks and drowned her. He was later tried and executed. His story was turned into the novel 'An American Tragedy' and several movies. I am reading 'American Tragedy' now and it's interesting to see the parallels between the actual case and the fictionalized story.

It was well researched with excellent photo layouts.
I had thought I was well acquainted with the case but discovered many errors in my previous readings after reading this book. The author dispelled many myths about the case, but did not attempt to prove any position without solid facts. Recommend it to my fellow amateur "criminiologists."

The Negotiating Game
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (January, 1993)
Author: Chester L. Karrass
Average review score:

The negotiating game
This book is excellent and really gets to the heart of the very nature of negotion. It is both insightful, and practical. I reccomend this book strongly and give my compliments to Chester L. Karrass!

The Negotiating Game
I initially started reading a 1970's version of the book while on vacation, but was unable to bring the book with me. The content is right on. I am pleased there is a new revised edition with modern day examples and analogies. I am purchasing several copies as gifts. I highly recommend it. For those shying away from the "self help" genre, make this an exception.

Excellent methods to negotiating a win-win situation!
Mr. Karrass' years of experience provide an excellent and credible background. In combination with the tapes, he portrays real-life examples of how he discovers the true motivations behind a sellers' needs, helps the seller reach those needs, and get a better all-around deal for himself in the process. Mr. Karrass truly seeks to improve the deal for both parties involved.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. The techniques apply to both personal and business life.

Sources of Chinese Tradition
Published in Hardcover by Columbia University Press (15 December, 1999)
Authors: Theodore De Bary, Wm. Theodore de Bary, Wing-Tsit Chan, Julia Ching, David Johnson, Kwang-Ching Liu, David Mungello, Chester Tan, William Theodore De Bary, and Richard John Lufrano
Average review score:

Absolutely essential
I'll make this short...For anyone interested in Chinese history, literature, or culture, this volume is an absolutely essential collection of primary sources, and includes prefaces and explanations by China scholars. There is no one better than de Bary, and this new edition includes everything from the 1960 edition up through the Jiang Zemin era.

all the classics and essentials
I've read a little of this and that about Chinese history and religion, and I needed a book to fill in the basics and the details. This was perfect.

First, the selections included excerpts of almost everything I'd ever heard of: Shang Oracle Bones, the Analects of Confucius and the Confucian classics including the I Ching; Mozi; the Tao Te Ching; Zhuangzi (who famously dreamed that he was a butterfly); Mencius; Xunzi; the Zuozhuan; Sun Tzu's art of war; all kinds of stuff about Chinese schools of Buddhism including the Lotus Sutra and the Flower Garden Sutra and the history of Guanyin and Wutai Shan; Li Po (Li Bo) and Tu Fu (Du Fu); and neo-Confucianism (which was so influential in Korea). In short, this is really, practically the "Eatern Canon" and the selections are deserving of such a label. I was in turns morally and intellectually challenged, uplifted, informed and surprised; but rarely bored and never disappointed.

Second, the introductory essays were exactly what I wanted to know: who might have written it, and when, and who read, and what it meant to them. For all that information, they were still brief and the bibliography was sufficient to help me chase the points that left me curious. An important thing these essays did was to cover the political, historical and social backgrounds (and foregrounds) of the texts, so I learned about Chinese history as well as literature and religion. If that is what you want to do, this book will serve you well.

The binding is excellent, and while the price might look steep I have to say it's a bargain considering what you get.

I didn't read Volume Two, and so I don't know if it is as good. It is certainly a lot smaller!

An impressively updated, indispensable reference.
This second edition of a classic provides an update on a reference recommended for college-level collections specializing in Chinese literature. Sources of Chinese Tradition has been recognized already as a scholarly staple: in its new form Sources of Chinese Tradition has been extended to include the Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin eras of China and includes invaluable source readings on history and literature of the times, from the 18th-century Qing civilization onward.

Tropical Living: Contemporary Dream Houses in the Philippines
Published in Hardcover by Tuttle Publishing (01 June, 2001)
Authors: Elizabeth Reyes, Andrew Chester Ong, and Chester Ong
Average review score:

Highly Recommended!
If you are into tropical architecture, this sure is the book for you! Not much text which makes it of "worth" + great photography! Before planning a house, this sure is a must-have! Houses featured here has its owne individuality and character! Dont miss it!...

A designing must
This is a beautifully photographed and well-organized showcase of wonderful Philippine homes. The range of houses covered is amazing and you're sure to get inspiration from one of the many fine examples of East meets West design as well as the seamless blend of Spanish, Malay, and Western heritage that the Philippines has. The homes are fabulous and even if you aren't thinking of redecorating, you will be after you finish it. One of the things that I particularly like about this is that unlike many books on Asian homes which focus only on either architectural design OR the interiors, this one gives a good balance of both. I just wish that the book had more pages.

Philippine Dream Homes
This was truly a feast for my senses. The Filipino elite is a highly sophisticated, well travelled, cosmopolitan, tropical, and casually elegant group who have developed a blended taste and style of their own. This book could be renamed "Tropical Dream Homes of the Philippines Rich and Famous". What is truly visible in this book is the rich diversity and fusion of the different cultures - Chinese, Spanish, Indonesian, Malaysian, and American - creating a Philippine cosmo-Asian blend. I highly recommend this book.

Adirondack Tragedy: The Gillette Murder Case of 1906
Published in Paperback by Chauncy Pr (December, 1986)
Author: Joseph W. Brownell
Average review score:

A Fascinating Story
Anyone who a) lives in upstate New York (as I do), b) is a fan of Theodore Dreiser, or c) watches old movies is sure to know about the famous Chester Gillette murder case. The incident was turned into the famous novel, 'An American Tragedy" and later into a movie. This book is excellent because it gives all the details of Chester's life, his trial, and love letters written between him and his girlfriend whom he later murdered. For people reading the novel, which I am doing now, it is also helpful because there is a chart telling who each of the characters was actually based on in real life. This book is out of print nationwide, but you can still find it here in upstate New york in giftshops or bookstores. I got my copy at the Herkimer Jail where Gillette was kept in 1907. They still have tours here.

A captivating true story!
This is a book detailing the true historical account of the Grace Brown Murder (done in by Chester Gillette). Occurring at the beginning of the century, Theodore Drieser based his novel, AMERICAN TRAGEDY, on newspaper accounts of the murder and trial. Later, Hollywood used this same story for A PLACE IN THE SUN - an Academy Award winner. Joseph Brownell has spent decades researching the case and getting (never before allowed) family interviews. He still lectures about the case. The book is now in a revised print

Arcifanfano: King of Fools
Published in Paperback by Unmuzzled Ox (June, 1998)
Authors: Carlo Goldoni, Michael I. Andre, W. H. Auden, and Chester Kallman
Average review score:

A masterful translation by Auden
I wish there were more books like this one. Here, the libretto of an almost-forgotten opera is translated by a poet of the very first rank. The result is some very entertaining comic poetry.

A new lost Masterpiece
This is the best verse play I've ever read. It is in fact a translation of an 18th century play by Carlo Goldoni done by -- W.H. Auden!

Arise: A Christian Psychology of Love
Published in Paperback by Open Door (December, 1985)
Authors: Chester P. Michael and Marie C. Norrisey
Average review score:

An Awakening in Spirituality
This thought-provoking book presents to readers a comprehensive exploration of human physiological and spiritual development through the blending of Christian spirituality with related Jungian concepts. Beginning with the premise that the key to a successful happy life is the fullest possible development of our unlimited potential for love, the author explores each of the seven-year stages of growth and the spirituality enveloped within each. Through identifying opposing attributes of the human psyche, the author depicts these in the greatest Christian symbol of opposite tensions; the cross. Relationships and friendships of the same and opposing sexes are discussed in the light of unselfish loving. The reader is proffered many personal challenges in examining their own personal relationships; however the author suggests that the greatest challenge and truest test of maturity lies in loving our enemies; both inner and outer! It is in the final chapter, "Encounters with God", that the author clearly points to some of the many challenges and changes that must occur in our own physchological and spiritual development to become fully capable of making a complete, unselfish, and truthful commitment to God. The author suggests that as we move forward in our spiritual journey and growth toward wholeness, holiness, and maturity, we develop and discover that our unlimited potential for love and limitless desire to be loved is only fulfilled only in Him who desired us first!

Outstanding book for those interested in spiritual study
Father Chester (Chet) Michael presents a consise summary of Jungian psychology, Christian spirituality, and spiritual development which is one of those books that you should go back to at least every two months and reread. Don't be fooled by the low price, the book is worth far more than the price charged. This, and his "Prayer and Temperment", are the beginnings of what he has taught for spiritual direction for many years, and are filled with both intellectual insight and years of experience.

Collecting World Coins: A Century of Circulating Issues 1901 - Present (Collecting World Coins)
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (August, 2003)
Authors: Chester L. Krause, Clifford Mishler, and Colin R., II Bruce
Average review score:

Covers 330 coin-issuing countries and states
Chester Krause, et.al.'s Collecting World Coins widens the focus to world coins from 1901 to the present, appearing in its updated 9th edition to cover 330 coin-issuing countries and states. Over 20,000 coins are listed by date and valued in up to four grade levels. The black and white coin photos here are even more extensive and essential for identification.

excellent reference to 20th century world coins
Adequate-resolution black-and-white photographs of the vast majority (if not all) of the 20th century world circulation business-strike coinage.

Especially historically accurate. For example Germany is divided into the coinage of various coin-minting units of government over its tumultuous and shattered 20th-century history: Anhalt-Dessau, Baden, Bavaria, Bremen, Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Hamburg, Hesse-Darmstadt, Lippe-Detmold, Lubeck, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Oldenburg, Prussia, Reuss-Obergreiz, Saxe-Altenburg, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Saxe-Meiningen, Saxe-Weimar-Eisenbach, Saxony, Schaumburg-Lippe, Waldeck-Pyrmont, Wurttemberg, German Empire (1871-1918), Weimar Republic (1919-1933), Third Reich (1933-1945), Federal Republic of Germany (West & unified) (1945-present), Saarland (1945-1957), and German Democratic Republic (East)(1945-1990). I consider that nation-state categorization alone impressive and intimate knowledge of coinage production in Germany, let alone the over-300 coin types documented among all of those coin-producing governments. Similar detail is taken with a multitude of other countries worldwide, with whose history I am less familiar.

Number of coins produced each year are given as are prices for typically 3 grades: very fine, extremely fine, and uncirculated.

The only way that Kraus could "improve" this book is to release a 19th century edition, an 18th century edition, a 17th century edition, and so forth, because it is disappointing to have the history truncated at 1901. Although I am not aware of such per-century editions slicing horizontally across the world, Krause has produced vertical slices by country, such as the history of German coins spanning multiple centuries, which of course overlaps in the 20th century with this book.

The Crystal Eye: Alein Chronicles Book 3

Great Books!!
Deborah Chester must bring out # 3. The first two are both incredible works of literature. I can't wait for the next incredible book! P.S.-Beat Israi down, Ampris!

I have not read the 3rd book. But I have read the first 2.
Hello, my name is Eric. I have not read this 3rd book yet and I will soon. But till then, I think that this 3rd should be just as good as the first 2. I feel that Deborag Chester is doing a FANTASTIC job of creating a new enviroment for the readers. I don't get to read to often and really would like to. But when I get my hands on these books I can't seem to set them down, I start with 5 pages and realize that I have been reading for quite some time now. By the time I actualy set the book down to get some water or something I have read at least 40 pages. The book is fantastic. I would have to say this is my favorite book yet. If there were to be a movie of this, I would be first in line to see it. To make a movie of something like this would be quite hard though I would belive. She is so imaginative that our own technology could not keep up. :)

Anyhow, in simple words. "THE BOOK IS GREAT"

Thank you Deborah Chester for writing such a wonderfull story and I hope to keep reading more from this author.
